Where is the outrage now?

Where is the Ghairat Brigade? Where are the nationalists? Where are the defenders of Pakistan’s honour when our very President is being insulted by the foreign media? Why they remain silent when the representative of the nation is being tarred by foreigners?

My blood began to boil today when I read in The News that foreign media is attacking our president. Of course, these hypocrites in the media are actually SUPPORTING ATTACKS ON PAKISTAN because they are not nationalists, they are not patriots – NO. They are hypocrites one and all.

You do not have to be a supporter of Zardari, but a true patriot is a SUPPORTER OF PAKISTAN! And does not allow insults to our leaders by foreign medias.

Where is Shireen Mazari now? Where is Ahmed Quriashi? Where is the pride now? Where is the outrage now? It is silence from these hypocrites only.

REAL PAKISTANI NATIONALISTS WILL NOT REMAIN SILENT AS OUR PRESIDENT IS INSULTED BY FOREIGN MEDIA!!!

Afghanistan Pakistan Partnership

Zardari and Karzai

President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday said Pakistan and Afghanistan should stand together and persuade the international community to devise a Marshal Plan for the region to get rid of militancy and its effects.

“The two countries need to speak the same language at international forums because both suffer from the same malaise caused by the same mindset of militancy and extremism,” the president said while talking to Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the bilateral talks. The Afghan delegation, led by Hamid Karzai, included Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul, National Security Adviser Dr Rangin Dafdar Spanta, Education Minister Dr Farooq Wardak and charge d’affaires Majnoon Gulab.

President Zardari led the Pakistani delegation comprising Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood

Qureshi, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Hina Rabbani Khar, Secretary General to the President Salman Faruqui and president’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar.

President Zardari said there may be some minor variations in the medication needed by Pakistan and Afghanistan to meet the challenges of militancy but the root-cause of the malaise being the same, the two countries needed to be on the same page, speak the same language and demand assistance from the international community with the same vigour and intensity, president’s spokesman said.

President Zardari also suggested that foreign ministers of the two countries should sit together and work out modalities in this regard. Farhatullah Babar said President Zardari also endorsed the suggestion of his Afghan counterpart to convene a meeting of the Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga after the Afghan Peace Jirga held its deliberations.

The president said the Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga will help take forward the process of friendship. “Every step that can be taken must be taken to address our common issues,” Zardari said with reference to the proposed meeting of the Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga.

Strengthening bilateral ties and ways to address regional issues related to peace and security and jointly fighting terrorism also came under discussion. Karzai, who flew in here late afternoon on a two-day visit, arrived at the Presidency and met President Zardari soon after his arrival.

During the exclusive and delegation-level talks, President Zardari stressed for enhanced interaction between the two countries to better cope with the issues of terrorism and extremism. He said the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan were of great importance and termed terrorism a common challenge to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He said Pakistan was determined to fight militancy to the end, which was a long drawn battle and there was no quick solution to this problem. President Zardari stressed the need for greater economic cooperation between the two countries and said the government was determined to correct the past mistakes to carve out a better future.

He pointed out that Pakistan’s bilateral trade with Afghanistan was $ 1.4 billion in 2008 and there was a vast economic potential and great opportunities for cooperation. He said Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement was under negotiations and hoped it would further boost the economic interaction.

Karzai urged for a partnership which allows realisation of the full potential of human and natural resources. He called for new development projects and investment in the two countries driven by energy corridors in the region. Karzai also thanked Zardari for Pakistan’s support and efforts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Afghanistan.

USA Secretary of Defense Pledges Faithfulness to Pakistan

USA Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

USA Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

USA Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has pledged faithfulness to a partnership with Pakistan in comments to military officers today. The following report is from Dawn newspaper:

The United States has no designs on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons or ”a single inch of Pakistani soil,” US Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Pakistani military officers Friday, adding that fighting terrorists along the Afghan border is in Pakistan’s interest as well as Washington’s.”We have enemies in common along the border, but we also have many other interests in common,” Gates said, and the Pakistani military has choices to make about its resources and focus just as the US armed forces have done.

Addressing the legacy of mistrust and what he called an ”organized propaganda campaign” to misrepresent US intentions, Gates used carefully calibrated phrasing to tick off some of the allegations against the United States in wide circulation in Pakistan.

”I fully understand why some of you may be skeptical about the US commitment to Pakistan,” Gates told officers at Pakistan’s National Defense University.

Many in his audience came of professional age in the 1990s, when the United States had cut off military ties to Pakistan and largely ignored the growth of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The United States wants Pakistan to take on Taliban militants who use its territory as a refuge, but Gates’ rhetoric on the subject during two days of talks in the Pakistani capital was notably mild.

He said he was deeply impressed with Pakistan’s military offensive against militants within its borders.

”The leadership will make the decisions” about when or whether they are going to do something. ”That’s just fine with me,” Gates said during an interview with Pakistani and US journalists.

Asked whether the US was winning in the long battle against al Qaeda terrorism, Gates said the United States has made progress but hasn’t won yet. He said al Qaeda and what he calls a syndicate of affiliated groups are less capable of large-scale, coordinated attacks than they once were and in many cases their leadership has been killed or captured.

The Obama administration has taken a softer tone with Pakistan in recent months, praising the country’s unprecedented assault on militants inside its borders and dropping public appeals for Pakistan to focus on the militants along its western border.

In his speech to military officers, Gates said the US seeks no military bases in the country and has no desire to control Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

”The United States does not covet a single inch of Pakistani soil,” Gates said.

In meetings Thursday with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, the country’s army chief and others, Gates called the antiterror operations a success so far, ”and he acknowledged to all of them that we realize that has come with a great deal of sacrifice for the military,” Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said following the sessions.

”We are not trying to prescribe a timeline by which they must do things,” Morrell said.

The Pakistani army said Thursday it cannot expand its offensive against militants for at least six months, after time to consolidate gains made against militants who primarily target Pakistan. Remarks from the Army’s chief spokesman did not rule out the offensive that would more directly benefit the United States.

”We are not talking years,” Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told reporters traveling with Gates. ”Six months to a year” would be needed before Pakistan could consolidate the gains it has made against militants in other parts of the country and then consider going farther, he said.

People Over Politics Should be the New Trend!

The media is reporting that President Zardari has directed provincial authorities to form peace committees after the tragic wave of violence to hit Karachi.

This is exactly what our country needs at this time. We need to stop the nonsensical party fighting. All it leads to is cheap, shoddy political tactics taking crucial attention away from what people are dealing with at the local levels.

Let’s not forget Karachi is home to the stock exchange and the central bank. Our people are dying and the economy faces huge risks. No matter what people think of the administration, this is the absolute right direction we need to be going in! I am just tired of the political games being played, it’s time for real sense and real action from our leaders.

Pak Army Ready For Any Danger Says Zardari

Pak Army is ready to face any danger says Zardari

President Zardari’s statements in Karachi made our chests swell with pride as he reinforced the foundation of our national security, that we are a peace-loving nation, but that we will stand firm against any enemies either foreign or domestic.

This should come as a clear warning to those anti-Pakistan jihadis who think that they can cause some communalist divide by attacking Ashura or bombing volleyball games. The lifetimes of these militant butchers is limited if they do not put down their weapons against Pakistan.

This is also an important message for those RAW agents and Indian ‘Trojan Horses’ that are trying to cause disruptions in Pakistan and make confusion and disorder in our public discussion, driving a rift between our relationship with the American military. We want peace, but peace with honour. Your attempts to isolate Pakistan will never succeed!

KARACHI: Pakistan is a peace-loving country and believes in peace with honour and does not want an arms race in the region, President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday said in an address after reviewing the Midshipmen Commissioning and SSC Class passing out parade of the Pakistan Naval Academy (PNA).

However, he said “our desire for peace must not be taken as a sign of weakness and our armed forces are ready to meet all challenges”.

He said “we have full faith in our armed forces and the people to defend our country”.

The President said “our armed forces are ready to meet all the challenges and guard against all external and internal threats”.

He stated it was every Pakistani’s duty to fight against external and internal enemies who disrupt the country’s peace and progress.

Zardari also pointed out that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would not disappoint the nation.

The president, at the occasion, emphasised that a strong navy was necessary to meet any challenge to Pakistan’s maritime security.

He said the recent induction of PNS Zulfiqar and helicopters was intended to strengthen the country’s naval fleet.

Zardari said he was pleased that Pakistan Navy was following the path of self-reliance and the construction of submarines in the country was a significant step forward in this direction.

Zardari urged that there should be optimum use of the national resources.

He said “the country is facing new challenges to its security…extremism is a big threat to our existence. We need a united national commitment to fight and defeat militancy.”

The President pointed out that the government has given political ownership to the fight against militancy and terrorism.

He said Pakistan Navy’s participation in the Coalition Maritime Campaign (CMCP) has enhanced the navy’s professional capabilities in checking arms, drugs and human smuggling.

President Zardari said it has also improved Pakistan’s capacity to fight the threat of militancy to our national security.

“It is reassuring that Pakistan Navy commanded the Maritime Task Force 150 thrice…it shows our resolve towards international peace,” he said.

On the occasion, President Zardari urged young naval officers to dedicate themselves to their profession and protect the sea lanes of the country’s communication.

He said he was pleased to learn that Pakistan Naval Academy was training cadets from the brotherly countries of Kazakhstan, Maldives, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Sudan.

The President also congratulated the passing out Midshipmen and the SSC Class cadets.

The President said he was particularly pleased to note that for the first time women officers were also part of this passing out parade.

He said the women officers’ presence at the ceremony reflected the policy of the government to encourage women to play their role in all areas of the national progress including defence.

The ceremony was also attended by the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majeed and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir.

The Real Goal of the Anti-NRO Brigade

The real goal of anti-NRO brigade is a return to politically motivated arrests.

The real goal of anti-NRO brigade is a return to politically motivated arrests.

NRO poses a particularly difficult problem. Or does it really? The fact is, NRO has taken over the media attention just as Kerry-Lugar bill has left, and has given TV anchors something to shout about instead of TTP attacks. But let’s take a look at this new topic of discussion and see if there’s something there.

To help us in this topic, we will refer to Aniq Zafar’s article in The News yesterday titled “Cleaning up the mess in the minds.”

The argument that all those who are alleged beneficiaries of NRO should resign is flawed to begin with. In Pakistan’s checkered political history there has been hardly any politician worth his name who has not been accused of one thing or the other. From Husain Shaheed Surharwady to Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto, politicians have had number of FIRs registered against them, cases dragged in the courts and of course media trials conducted. There is nothing new in the current situation as the bulk of the cases that will now be ‘reopened’ fall in the same category, where political considerations bore heavy on the investigation, prosecution and judiciary.

If the argument of moral brigade is accepted and it is established as a principle that all those who have had cases under process in the courts of law should resign then one has a very rosy picture for the future of Pakistan. This principle provides a great incentive to the government of the day to slap all kinds of cases against the opposition leaders. Finding irregularities and violations of the rules is the easiest of the cases that can be registered against anyone.

In this country a case filed against you for the violation of section 144 can take decades to settle. So you can literally put your opponents out of the contention for power by filing cases against them. Will that be acceptable?

For too long our politicians have used legal charges as a means of disarming their opposition. During the 1990s, this was a particularly popular move. In fact, when the list of NRO beneficiaries was finally released, it contained 34 different politicians!

And in case you think that there was something other than political gamesmanship going on in these charges, remember that Nawaz Sharif himself has said that most of the cases against Zardari were politically-motivated.

Mr. Zafar sees through the politically-motivated charges very easily, and finds it readily apparent the real motivation behind the NRO debate:

So what is the argument here of the moralist brigade? But don’t underestimate them they have an agenda and that is to take both President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani down. It is only a matter of strategy whom to take down first and then follow with the other.

This is simply a return to the old ways of using trumped up legal charges against political opponents to neutralize them so the anti-NRO brigade can  try to seize power for themselves. This will result in a lack of faith in our political institutions both at home and in the world, and it will also result in a “chilling effect” that will keep the best and brightest of our people from choosing a life of public service to their country. Who in their right mind would enter politics if they knew that they would be arrested and jailed only for political expediency?

Meanwhile, while these political operatives are going on TV talk shows and speaking incoherently about NRO, TTP is attacking and killing innocents. It makes you wonder whose side they are really on?

If ignorance is bliss, Sumayya Chawla is the happiest woman on the planet.

Another scorcher from Sana! If you’re not reading Sana’s blog, please you must add it to your list!

If ignorance is bliss, Sumayya Chawla is the happiest woman on the planet.

In her fantastically ridiculous piece, Is Pakistani Media Awake?, she is unflinchingly absurd, demonstrating to us all she has somehow escaped any character trait remotely resembling reasonableness.

It would be wrong to deride a work without citing the offensive statements, so here, dear Reader, is a small sampling of her rock-filled dish:

The ‘tough love’ response of Mrs Clinton to this was something along the lines of  ‘ well I am sorry you feel that way but it wasn’t our intention, you don’t have to take the money you know, if you don’t want to’. What exactly is going on here? Why isn’t anyone telling madam secretary that your country is killing innocent Pakistanis, killing babies rather, as she was so keen on pointing out in her address to university students in Lahore. Why didn’t any of our esteemed journalists ask her why the US is busy killing and bombing Pakistanis if we are such great friends and allies? Why wasn’t it politely suggested to her that she perhaps should not have come to Pakistan as she wasn’t very welcome here. Why don’t we see a revolt in the Pakistani media against the freak show that was Clinton’s visit to Pakistan? Why didn’t the big shot media anchors boycott the interview with Hillary Clinton while more than a 100 Pakistanis were being blown up in Peshawar and hundreds more were fighting for their lives? If Mr. Zardari and his government are not human enough to feel any empathy for his fellow Pakistanis who suffered terribly in this outrageous attack, where was the Pakistani media, why didn’t they refuse to cover her visit due to a national tragedy?  If they are such torchbearers of truth, then how dare they sat in their suits and ties and conducted an interview that amounted to nothing in terms of expressing the real sentiments of the majority of the Pakistani public? American Govt. has taken off its gloves and is now openly hostile to the Pakistani state and people, so why in God’s name are we still walking on eggshells.

As a lit major, the grammatical errors were enough to knock me down. However, I shall put forth a Herculean effort to ignore them all because we’re dealing with the bigger issue of her thought process mirroring that of a two-year old.

Within her bewildering rhetorical questions, I see her tripping over her own points.

I shall answer with my very own attempt at the Socratic method:

Is there anything wrong with a nation granting aid to another nation, especially one with which its aims are so closely aligned? Exactly what was wrong with Secretary Clinton pointing out Pakistan was under no obligation to take the aid? And exactly why are you viciously against the aid going to schools, police officers, health clinics, etc? Did you want to match the funds of Kerry-Lugar and supply the country with assistance? (That would be awfully generous of you!) Are you as upset with other international aid groups and private donors who donate to charitable causes within Pakistan? If not, I highly recommend you buy a dictionary and look up the word “consistency,” it’s a great word, one of my favorites. Ms. Chawla, do you have sympathy for any of the people killed by extremists or is your screeching reserved specifically for all things related to drones? Can you so easily ignore the suicide bombings and drive-by assassinations of brigadiers? If so, the Pakistani public envies you a good deal. Exactly why should the media have boycotted the interview with Secretary Clinton? How is closing our eyes and covering our ears going to solve problems? (See, this is where I see a vast wilderness of immaturity where your rationality should be, Miss Chawla.) Any notion of a “biased-in-favor-of-President-Zardari” media culture in Pakistan can be immediately dismissed, for even the President’s most outspoken detractors admit the media is staunchly anti-Zardari. In this way, do you realize you have outdone the Ahmed Quraishis of Pakistan? I advise you to be careful though, Mr. Quraishi tries his best to outdo everyone else in his nonsensical vitriol, he may not appreciate playing second fiddle to you. Also, please respect the office of the President and address him as such…he was voted in democratically, and if you must kick and scream, take that up with the public that voted overwhelmingly for the PPP. You wrote “American Govt. has taken off its gloves and is now openly hostile to the Pakistani state and people.” Did you consciously disregard the Secretary’s statements of friendship? I shall include one: “I am well aware that there is a trust deficit. My message is that’s not the way it should be. We cannot let a minority of people in both countries determine our relationship.” Miss Chawla, it appears you do a wonderful job on inducing amnesia and forget all the hard work both Americans and Pakistanis have done, currently do, and will continue doing to foster better relations.

You ask if the media is awake…I have to answer that no, the media — and you! — are fast asleep at the wheel.

Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn. If you cannot or are not willing to learn, Miss Chawla, then the knowledgeable and well-versed in nuance among us have a task: to continuously point out the flaws in arguments like yours and offer a vision of a world not driven by hate or fear-mongering.

Are Pakistan’s Anti-US Hawks Indian Trojan Horses?

Are Pakistan’s anti-American hawks – those constantly attacking the Americans and standing against close ties between Pakistan and the United States – Indian Trojan Horses? After all, at a time when India’s close relations with Washington are bringing it billions of dollars in investment and trade, sophisticated defence equipment and a civil nuclear deal, Pakistan’s anti-American turn can only benefit India.

The term “Trojan Horse” dates back to the Greek civilization and basically means “any trick that causes a target to invite a foe into a securely protected bastion or place.” We now know that even Baitullah Mehsud was an Indian agent as he received lots of funds from the Indian intelligence agencies. But for years Pakistan’s Jihadis and their media advocates built Mehsud up as an anti-American hero.

Indian support for Mehsud is no surprise. As we proved in the first part of this series, only India stands to gain from the destabilization of Pakistan’s government and from worsening Us-Pakistan relations. The question for this part of the series, then, is who are the Pakistani anti-US hawks that are intentionally or inadvertently acting as Indian Trojan Horses?

A daarhi does not a patriot make.

The meddling by Indian intelligence service RAW in Afghanistan and support for the destabilizing religious militants there is also no secret. Of course they do not want to see a strong and independent Islamic republic in Afghanistan that has normal relations with Pakistan, and they know the most effective way of ensuring that Afghanistan is unstable – and by that effect, sapping Pakistan’s resources – is to support militants.

Likewise, it has been well documented that Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and Baitullah Mehsud received substantial funding and support from RAW. And this should come as no surprise, really – after all, should Mehsudis prevail, it will be India that gains the most.

This use of religion to confuse and manipulate the ummah is a most diabolical act, but there are just as many civilian Trojan Horses also. Let us take a look at all those people who in the last one year have been attacking the attempts by the elected Zardari government to build better ties with United States.

Hypernationalists, Anti-Americanism, and India’s Prospering

Hypernationalists are often specifically targeted by intelligence agents who manipulate their passionate loyalties. We must not forget that, despite his support for Musharraf, Ahmed Quraishi’s anti-American rants created problems between the Americans and the Musharraf administration. Could it be that he is manipulated by India as what in intelligence parlance is known as “an unwitting agent?”

An inadvertent agent is often more valuable to intelligence agencies than intentional ones because they can easily pass lie detection devices and do not give themselves away so easily. After all, if Ahmed Quraishi believes he is being a nationalist, he will be more believable.

Let us also look at people like Hamid Gul and Shahid Masood. Again these people are well known anti-Indians, but their pitch has always been more anti-American. Why does Shahid Masood live in Dubai? Whom does he meet in Dubai? There are lots of Indians in Dubai and do any of them finance or influence him? Should that not be the subject of some analysis or concern in Islamabad?

Trojan Horses in Parliament?

Jamaat-e-Islami’s founder Maulana Maududi was opposed to the creation of Pakistan from the beginning and since independence the JI’s chief goal has been to grab power in the name of Islam. The overall effect of the Jamaat-e-Islami’s policies –whether in erstwhile East Pakistan or in Pakistan today—has been to weaken the Pakistani state? The Jamaatis constantly divide Pakistanis along religious lines. They make us think of each other as Kafirs or bad Muslims or unpatriotic. There is no difficulty visualizing that RAW is creating Trojan Horses from Jamaatis with the objective of not letting Pakistan live in peace.

If we turn to the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) are there any persons there who could be Trojan Horses? During Musharraf’s era they wanted to normalize relations with India and were content with being US surrogates. Both Tariq Azeem and Khurshid Kasuri who these days are screaming at the top of their lungs about the Kerry-Lugar bill were championing the opening of ties with India.

Pakistan Muslim League (N) is no better. Its hostility to the Pakistan army resulted in the 1999 coup d’etat and the party has no lost no opportunity to control the army or to put down the army top brass. While in power PML (N) initiated the bus diplomacy with India and even invited Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee to Pakistan against the wishes of the military. It maintained good relations with the United States. But out of power it is happy to push the anti-India, anti-US button as if destablising Pakistan is its real objective.

So what have these Trojan Horses tried to do?

One, engineer a clash between the civilian government and the military to make Pakistan unstable and weak.

Two, tried to also create a clash between US and Pakistan to ensure that India is not whipped by the superpower and US interests in America continue to expand while Pakistan’s ability to lobby the US continue to weaken.

Three, launched an attack campaign to discredit the reputation of those in the government who are well liked by Americans like President Zardari, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Ambassador Husain Haqqani and others to make Pakistan appear weak and childish in front of the world. If the hawks are the only Pakistani faces for Americans, the US will continue to turn against Pakistan thereby strengthening the Indo-US relationship.

Four, it is very interesting that this debate on Kerry-Lugar is the first debate in Pakistan where there is no mention of India, only anti-Americanism. Since when have we heard so little about the RAW involvement in such an issue?

Trojan Horses weaken Pakistan

Pakistan has been a nuclear power for over 20 years and yet doesn’t seem to have obtained the security it sought. Why? This is because the Indian lobby and RAW has worked nonstop to interfere with our relations with other world powers. It was India that helped create a clash between Nawaz Sharif and the United States over the nuclear weapons program while making sure that India obtained a nuclear deal as well as supply of nuclear fuel. Today, this interference with Pakistan’s security continues through the manipulation of Kerry-Lugar debate by these Indian Trojan Horses.

REAL Pak Nationalists

Pakistanis know that in order to stand up to the Indian threat they need support – military and economic – from the Americans and need American understanding to make sure India does not throw its weight around in South Asia. Causing a clash between Pakistan and its oldest ally, United States, cannot be the work of true Pakistani nationalists. It has to be the work of Indian Trojan Horses who claim to be acting in Pakistan’s interest while actually undermining it.
