IS LATEST INTERNET HOAX A RAW PYSOPS CAMPAIGN?

The latest internet hoax claiming the secret wedding of President Zardari and an American doctor may be a RAW PSYOPS campaign to undermine the national morale, research indicates. Psychological Operations or PSYOPS is the brand of propaganda campaigns that are meant to influence the emotions and undermine objective reasoning of the enemy. There is clear evidence that the latest internet hoax is actually a PSYOPS campaign of RAW.

This internet hoax appeared recently on a couple of blogs but had not authentic evidence to support it. Actually it was ignored by almost every Pakistani media group as the attempt was so obviously a fake that only someone with a low intelligence would believe such a story. The only media group in Pakistan to publish the story was Jang Group when the reporter Shaheen Sehbai fell for the story. But even Jang discovered the story was fake and ran separate stories that revealed that the president has never even met this American doctor.

The question must be asked why such a story would be invented and who would attempt to spread such a story. This leads to the underlying question of who would gain from Pakistanis believing this lie and losing faith in the government? Obviously the only answer is India who continues their attempts to weaken the strength of the nation by sowing seeds of depression and discontent.

India has seen the strength of a unified Pakistan in the reaction to militant attacks and flood devastation and has been given quite the shock of its lifetime. This has created a realisation in the Indian establishment that as long as Pakistan is united behind its government and security forces, nothing can undermine our sovereignty and our might. Their reaction was this latest hoax created as a desperate attempt by RAW to create division among the people.

But the Pakistani people do not have the brain of a mouse which is the only foolishness that would believe such a small minded attempt to create doubt and division. Rather this story has been laughed off the record as once again RAWs attempt to divide Pakistan has failed as it always will.

Did Army Snub Ahmed Quraishi, Shareen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood?

Not invited

A few weeks ago, Army Chief Gen. Kiyani invited editors and columnists to a press briefing. Interestingly, Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood were not invited. Was this an intentional snub by the military brass to send a clear signal that these people do not speak for the military? Or was it just that these journalists are so irrelevant that the Army did not think to invite them?

Usually, if a reporter is truly close to the establishment, they are not only invited, they are given special access like a closed door briefing before the official briefing so that they can get background statements from the officials. These four not only got no invitation to a closed door briefing, they were not even invited to the regular press briefing!

Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood are well known for claiming to be unofficial experts on the Pakistani establishment – especially the military. They are always saying that they have spoken to high up sources, even when what they say turns out to be wrong. But it seems from this latest snub that they are not as connected as they claim to be.

Ahmed Quraishi and Shireen Mazari in particular tend to represent ‘old think’ on security issues. They support a military coup and for the military to cut iself off from allied powers and are opposed to the present democracy and the way that Gen. Kiyani is working with the government.

While each of them probably has some contacts from the military, it could be that their contacts may not be current military leaders. Also, it could be that their sources are actually retired military or ex-military who supported the Musharraf and Zia dictatorships and are filling their heads with false information rather than accurate information in attempt to disrupt the actual policies of the current military establishment.

If this is the case, it makes sense for them not to receive invitations to press briefings by the military brass. The military leadership would recognize them as working for elements that are opposing the actual plans and policies of Gen. Kiyani and his staff so they would refuse them any invitations.

None of these media personalities will reveal who their sources are, so we do not know if this is the case. It could be that sometimes their sources do not exist at all, but are simply invented in order to give their articles and talk shows some air of authority that is missing. But it seems very apparent that if they cannot even get an invitation to a public press briefing, they probably do not have sources that are very high up.

Was this a calculated snub? Is it because Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood do not represent the Army? Are Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood reflecting an old mindset from the past that the present establishment wants to distance itself from? Or does the military brass think that Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood are just too irrelevant to bother inviting them?

Whatever the answers are, one thing is made clear by the snub – Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood obviously do not speak for the military.

Must not repeat history!

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

There can be no doubt Pakistan faces huge challenges ahead. The economy is unsteady, the government faces a myriad of domestic issues and concerns, and the ever-present threat of extremism hangs over the nation.

It is therefore tempting to see a major shake-up, even some sort of a revolution, as an answer to the current situation.

But this is where we must be careful, and look to the past for guidance.

Thirty years ago, Iran was in a similar situation. The way that country responded then leads us directly to where it is now: a claustrophobic theocracy, depriving its people of civil rights, freedom of expression, and in the last presidential elections, the right to vote. Is that what Pakistan wants to be? Absolutely not. We must avoid the pitfalls, especially when they are so predictable.

We must learn from history. We must learn that falling under the umbrella of hardliners to deal with the problems is never the answer. Going from a bad situation to a worse situation…well, that is unacceptable.

In the world we live in, journalists rant and rail against the government. While a free media is valued and respected in any democracy, one cannot ignore the fact that it is a profession that comes with much responsibility.

The Hamid Mirs and the Shaheen Sehbais must understand that to rip apart our fledgling democracy is to give power to the opponents of democracy. We have the makings of a solid democracy, we must stick by those principles.

Our system of checks and balances exists to solve our problems in a clear, rational manner. The recent NRO decision by the Supreme Court highlights the staying power of our democratic institutions. The President has remained impartial and respectful of the Court’s power, and now we will see the results play out. But again, all this must be done in the framework of democracy.

Any alternative option will be catastrophic for our future. Just look at Iran.
