Blame Game Plays To Indian Hand

It has been more than a week since the US military operation took place killing Osama Bin Laden in the dark of night and our government and security forces waking up to find out what has happened. There is no doubt. Pakistan is under heavy scrutiny. Various American officials and civilians are now wondering about the extent of Pakistani knowledge of Osama Bin Laden’s whereabouts and if Pakistan betrayed the United States in his support.

So far, no evidence has come up suggesting that Pakistan’s intelligence services, the ISI, or the government were aware of the terrorist leader’s hideout. Numerous posts, articles and interviews by pseudo intellectual bloggers, wannabe politicians and every pencil pusher office holder who thinks that he or she knows what happened and what’s best for the country. Such “intellectuals” have also openly bashed the government and our security forces whilst asking for resignations from people in key positions.

Being a self-proclaimed Muhib-e-Watan and a patriot of the highest degree, I cannot emphasize enough at this time how important it is to stop playing the blame game. A major lapse occurred, no one is denying that and yes, anyone responsible should be held accountable for this lapse. The best action to take now is a thorough and proper investigation where the personnel responsible for this lapse should be held accountable. A proper procedure and protocol should be followed. Arguing amongst ourselves and blaming the government or the security forces only weakens us at a nation and plays into the hands of Indians.

I recently read an article that says our leaders including the likes of Ch. Nisar and Shah Mehmood Qureshi, are saying how the government officials should resign because of great embarrassment and failure to do their jobs. Can someone please ask this leaders if they know of a single Indian intelligence official who stepped down after 26/11? Or if the Indian PM or President resigned afterwards? Arguing and trying to play the domestic politics in their favor will not help our nation prosper and constant bickering and name-calling will only serve to portray us as a joke in the international arena. The scary part is that this handful of people is intentionally or unintentionally playing the part of an Indian Trojan Horse.

These hyper-nationalists, politicians, and media personnel, who play a big role in molding the minds of 180 million population, should know that openly blaming the government leadership or implying that our Army has been a let down and become a cause of embarrassment plays right into the hands of Indians who are already declaring us a failed state incapable of handling our own matters. These influential people should not be pointing out our internal insecurities and weakening authority of our military and civilian leadership. Who will protect our borders then when our neighbors come knocking? Social butterflies or Rock Band champion burger bachas?

I follow twitter and face book and the one trend that I am picking up on is how Indians are enjoying this whole situation at our expense. They are keen on pointing out our security flaws and never forget to mention the lion’s shares of our military budget from our country’s economy. It is inconceivable for them that ISI was not able to keep a track of OBL or for that matter was caught off guard by the US Navy Seals operation. The one good thing that I see here is that it shows how Indian mindset knows of our superiority in military intelligence and they just cannot comprehend that an information and security lapse was present.

Finally, I agree that there should be an investigation and anyone found responsible for bringing this embarrassment on us should be lashed upon in regards to this whole dilemma. But everything needs to be done in such a way that problems are taken care of internally where reports and investigations are made, and people responsible are held accountable. Shouting, yelling and name-calling in media is only giving way to Indians and outsiders making fun of the entire situation at our expense.

Is RAW Behind Anti-Pakistan Journalist Latest Lies?

Source: Pakistan Media Watch

A column in the New York Times newspaper by American commentator Selig Harrison has raised quite a bit of media attention around a conspiracy theory that the government is giving Gilgit Baltistan to China, a claim publicly denied by the Foreign Office. As with most conspiracy theories of this magnitude, a little basic research demonstrates that Mr Harrison and his claim of Pakistan ceding territory to China are unreliable.

While it took me all of 15 minutes to discover that Mr Harrison’s reputation precedes his remarks in the US, our own media seems to be more than willing to repeat the wildest conspiracies without the least effort in fact-checking. More troubling is that the Mr Harrison’s conspiracy seems to have been fed to him in part by Pakistani media.

The first suspicion I had about Mr Harrison’s claim was that it was simply too outrageous to be believed without some proof. Of course, Mr Harrison provides none in his column.

Most troubling, as I said, is that Mr Harrison’s claim appears to be based at least in part on rumours by unnamed journalists. He says that his sources for this conspiracy theory are:

…reports from a variety of foreign intelligence sources, Pakistani journalists and Pakistani human rights workers…

First, what foreign intelligence sources? While it would certainly be in keeping with journalistic practice to hold confidential the name of an informant, it is not unusual to at least report what agency the informant is associated with. Without playing into alternate conspiracy theories, it is well documented that intelligence agencies partake in disinformation campaigns designed to sow discord in targeted nations. Considering the location in question, is it not important to know which foreign intelligence agency is making these claims?

Second, it is quite troubling that some representatives of Pakistani media have been feeding such stories to foreign reporters. Considering Mr Harrison’s background (as we will explain below), it is worrisome that these Pakistani journalists went to Mr Harrison to promote their story. Certainly Mr Harrison will refuse to expose who these Pakistani journalists are, which is too bad. While there is reason to protect the identities of “whistle blowers” against official corruption for fear of their safety, there is little public good gained by allowing journalists to spread unsubstantiated rumours.

But let’s look at Mr Harrison’s claims directly. Many of Mr Harrison’s claims are nothing more than hysterical conjecture.

Mystery surrounds the construction of 22 tunnels in secret locations where Pakistanis are barred. Tunnels would be necessary for a projected gas pipeline from Iran to China that would cross the Himalayas through Gilgit. But they could also be used for missile storage sites.

I could not help but think of the famous American claims about Iraq’s “aluminum tubes”. The idea that China, which shares a border with China, would need to store missiles under Gilgit-Balochistan makes no sense. Unfortunately for Mr Harrison’s conspiracy theory, though, building tunnels for a gas pipeline would be a perfectly reasonable explanation for an increased presence of Chinese workers in the region. It’s just not quite as scary.

Of course, this is not the first claim that Mr Harrison has made about the break up of Pakistan. The Pakistan Policy Blog noticed this trend of Mr Harrison’s back in 2008, noting that “Selig Harrison has made a career of predicting the imminent break-up of South Asian states”. In 2006, Mr Harrison reported for the French newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique that Baluchistan and Sindh were preparing to quit the nation.

While there is no denying that we have seen groups of separatists and ethnic strife in the country (what country has not experienced such?), Mr Harrison’s reports consistently take on a tone of imminent national dissolution that is simply not supported by the facts. Four years after Mr Harrison’s prediction in the French media and no such calamity has occurred, of course. Yet Mr Harrison continues to predict the breakup of Pakistan. Perhaps he believes that if he simply wishes hard enough, it will come true?

Joshua Foust, a respected American journalist and intelligence consultant on South Asia, wrote a scathing profile of Mr Selig Harrison in 2008 in which he calls Mr Harrison’s writings on Pashtunistan, “silly, over-hyped nonsense” and says,

As it is, Harrison casts a very unconvincing shadow on the discourse over the Pashtunistan issue. It merits serious discussion—separatist movements always do. But placing them in their proper context, both historically and socially, is just as important as making a case you’ve been trying to make for years. As it is, Harrison seems to rely on mischaracterization, hyperbole, and “the soft bigotry of low expectations” (to borrow a phrase and avoid slinging charges of Orientalism)—hardly the stuff of a world-renowned regional expert. I hesitate to accuse Harrison of wearing ideological blinders, as I can’t really figure out what his ideology is, simultaneously blaming the West for subjugating the Pashtuns while granting them unlimited power to unite, declare independence, and bring down that very same West.

But that’s par for the course for most writing these days on Pashtuns, and even on Afghanistan. It just doesn’t add up. My question here, though, is the same as it was for Ann Marlowe: who the hell keeps paying him to write? I have to assume it is simply the ignorant, those more aware of his reputation than his recent scholarship, without the means to fact-check what he writes so long as it confirms their biases. That is a major loss to the field, that rigor. But, as with the curious longevity of Thomas Johnson (whom, ironically enough, Marlowe has called “brilliant”), it doesn’t seem to be that unoriginal, either.

Today, of course, Mr Harrison is not talking only about a separatist rebellion, but he has added a twist by claiming the government is “handing over de facto control of the strategic Gilgit-Baltistan region in the northwest corner of disputed Kashmir to China”. His evidence? Chinese PLA workers building roads and bridges.

Mr Harrison’s column, it is important to note, appears on the Opinion page of the New York Times. It does not even pretend to be an objective or investigative report, nor should it. Mr Harrison makes clear his position when he writes,

What is happening in the region matters to Washington for two reasons. Coupled with its support for the Taliban, Islamabad’s collusion in facilitating China’s access to the Gulf makes clear that Pakistan is not a U.S. “ally.”

This is a position in direct conflict with the official positions of the US and Pakistan. It is simply Mr Harrison’s opinion, and possibly an attempt to change the direction of Pakistan-US relations. Something, it seems, he has been trying to do for years.

An opinion column with no evidence, a discredited author, and sources from unnamed foreign intelligence agencies. One has to ask why the Pakistani media has been so ready to republish such rubbish. In fact, The News republished the piece in full today. The Nation makes note of the author’s “obsessive anti-Pakistan posture”, but then reproduces most of the author’s claims.

Worse still, who are the members of the Pakistani media who are feeding such conspiracy theories to foreign journalists? This blog has been criticized in the past for suggesting that there is a cycle in which Pakistani conspiracy theorists posing as journalists feed outrageous stories to the international press, who then repeat them, giving them the credibility needed to be repeated yet again in mainstream Pakistani media. But we see here an example of exactly this.

Actions of the media have consequences. Those consequences can be good – as when the media uncovers evidence of corruption or brings attention to pressing issues. Or they can be bad – as when the media causes confusion and distraction by placing more importance on sales than on research and facts. While we cannot control what discredited commentators like Selig Harrison write in the international media, we should not be fueling a cycle of misinformation and conspiracy theories. We should be setting an example of journalistic excellence that provides honest and accurate information at home and abroad.

Where is the outrage now?

Where is the Ghairat Brigade? Where are the nationalists? Where are the defenders of Pakistan’s honour when our very President is being insulted by the foreign media? Why they remain silent when the representative of the nation is being tarred by foreigners?

My blood began to boil today when I read in The News that foreign media is attacking our president. Of course, these hypocrites in the media are actually SUPPORTING ATTACKS ON PAKISTAN because they are not nationalists, they are not patriots – NO. They are hypocrites one and all.

You do not have to be a supporter of Zardari, but a true patriot is a SUPPORTER OF PAKISTAN! And does not allow insults to our leaders by foreign medias.

Where is Shireen Mazari now? Where is Ahmed Quriashi? Where is the pride now? Where is the outrage now? It is silence from these hypocrites only.

REAL PAKISTANI NATIONALISTS WILL NOT REMAIN SILENT AS OUR PRESIDENT IS INSULTED BY FOREIGN MEDIA!!!

Ahmed Quraishi Calls Military "Humiliating" and "Incapable"

It is no secret that Ahmed Quraishi hates America, but now he has started to insult the military too. His latest article on his web site is nothing but a long criticism of the military, calling it incompetent and weak. Why is Ahmed Quraishi trying to undermine the military at a time that we are under attack by jihadis and feeling tension from India?

Supposedly a complaint about trade deal, the real target of Ahmed’s slanderous article is the military. After criticising the deal by suggesting that it is against Pak interests, Ahmed Quraishi says “What’s more likely is that the Pakistani military was consulted before granting this concession to US, Afghanistan and, indirectly, India.” Also he says that the number of US military personnel in Pakistan “would not be possible without a nod from the Pakistani military”.

So now Ahmed Quraishi is saying that government and military both are working against Pak interest? What exactly does he think is Pakistan’s interest? Talibans?

Ahmed Quraishi goes on to say that “the Pakistani military is on board” with “humiliating concessions” and “self-defeating compromises”. He accuses the Pakistan military of being “incapable”.

This is the ‘super-patriot’ Ahmed Quraishi who is throwing these terrible insults at our own military? Or is it the ‘media Taliban’ Ahmed Quraishi. I think it is obvious which.

Did Army Snub Ahmed Quraishi, Shareen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood?

Not invited

A few weeks ago, Army Chief Gen. Kiyani invited editors and columnists to a press briefing. Interestingly, Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood were not invited. Was this an intentional snub by the military brass to send a clear signal that these people do not speak for the military? Or was it just that these journalists are so irrelevant that the Army did not think to invite them?

Usually, if a reporter is truly close to the establishment, they are not only invited, they are given special access like a closed door briefing before the official briefing so that they can get background statements from the officials. These four not only got no invitation to a closed door briefing, they were not even invited to the regular press briefing!

Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood are well known for claiming to be unofficial experts on the Pakistani establishment – especially the military. They are always saying that they have spoken to high up sources, even when what they say turns out to be wrong. But it seems from this latest snub that they are not as connected as they claim to be.

Ahmed Quraishi and Shireen Mazari in particular tend to represent ‘old think’ on security issues. They support a military coup and for the military to cut iself off from allied powers and are opposed to the present democracy and the way that Gen. Kiyani is working with the government.

While each of them probably has some contacts from the military, it could be that their contacts may not be current military leaders. Also, it could be that their sources are actually retired military or ex-military who supported the Musharraf and Zia dictatorships and are filling their heads with false information rather than accurate information in attempt to disrupt the actual policies of the current military establishment.

If this is the case, it makes sense for them not to receive invitations to press briefings by the military brass. The military leadership would recognize them as working for elements that are opposing the actual plans and policies of Gen. Kiyani and his staff so they would refuse them any invitations.

None of these media personalities will reveal who their sources are, so we do not know if this is the case. It could be that sometimes their sources do not exist at all, but are simply invented in order to give their articles and talk shows some air of authority that is missing. But it seems very apparent that if they cannot even get an invitation to a public press briefing, they probably do not have sources that are very high up.

Was this a calculated snub? Is it because Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood do not represent the Army? Are Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood reflecting an old mindset from the past that the present establishment wants to distance itself from? Or does the military brass think that Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood are just too irrelevant to bother inviting them?

Whatever the answers are, one thing is made clear by the snub – Ahmed Quraishi, Shireen Mazari, Shaheen Sehbai, and Shahid Masood obviously do not speak for the military.

The Real Goal of the Anti-NRO Brigade

The real goal of anti-NRO brigade is a return to politically motivated arrests.

The real goal of anti-NRO brigade is a return to politically motivated arrests.

NRO poses a particularly difficult problem. Or does it really? The fact is, NRO has taken over the media attention just as Kerry-Lugar bill has left, and has given TV anchors something to shout about instead of TTP attacks. But let’s take a look at this new topic of discussion and see if there’s something there.

To help us in this topic, we will refer to Aniq Zafar’s article in The News yesterday titled “Cleaning up the mess in the minds.”

The argument that all those who are alleged beneficiaries of NRO should resign is flawed to begin with. In Pakistan’s checkered political history there has been hardly any politician worth his name who has not been accused of one thing or the other. From Husain Shaheed Surharwady to Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto, politicians have had number of FIRs registered against them, cases dragged in the courts and of course media trials conducted. There is nothing new in the current situation as the bulk of the cases that will now be ‘reopened’ fall in the same category, where political considerations bore heavy on the investigation, prosecution and judiciary.

If the argument of moral brigade is accepted and it is established as a principle that all those who have had cases under process in the courts of law should resign then one has a very rosy picture for the future of Pakistan. This principle provides a great incentive to the government of the day to slap all kinds of cases against the opposition leaders. Finding irregularities and violations of the rules is the easiest of the cases that can be registered against anyone.

In this country a case filed against you for the violation of section 144 can take decades to settle. So you can literally put your opponents out of the contention for power by filing cases against them. Will that be acceptable?

For too long our politicians have used legal charges as a means of disarming their opposition. During the 1990s, this was a particularly popular move. In fact, when the list of NRO beneficiaries was finally released, it contained 34 different politicians!

And in case you think that there was something other than political gamesmanship going on in these charges, remember that Nawaz Sharif himself has said that most of the cases against Zardari were politically-motivated.

Mr. Zafar sees through the politically-motivated charges very easily, and finds it readily apparent the real motivation behind the NRO debate:

So what is the argument here of the moralist brigade? But don’t underestimate them they have an agenda and that is to take both President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani down. It is only a matter of strategy whom to take down first and then follow with the other.

This is simply a return to the old ways of using trumped up legal charges against political opponents to neutralize them so the anti-NRO brigade can  try to seize power for themselves. This will result in a lack of faith in our political institutions both at home and in the world, and it will also result in a “chilling effect” that will keep the best and brightest of our people from choosing a life of public service to their country. Who in their right mind would enter politics if they knew that they would be arrested and jailed only for political expediency?

Meanwhile, while these political operatives are going on TV talk shows and speaking incoherently about NRO, TTP is attacking and killing innocents. It makes you wonder whose side they are really on?

Quraishi's Coup: Who Is He Really Working For?

Ahmed Quriashi has graduated from conspiracy propagandist to seditionist, it seems. On his Facebook page, Quraishi has been posting semi-coherent rants calling for the military to overthrow the Pakistani government with force:

The American house of cards in Pakistan – Zardari, NRO, Malik-Haqqani and the famous Mush-BB deal – are all coming down. I urge Gen. Tariq Majeed and Gen. Kayani to ditch that deal and save the country from this US- and UK-imposed leadership. Not that the replacement is any better. But we’ll deal with that later. Get rid of CIA and MI6 agents in Islamabad first.

Ahmed Quraishi calls for coup in Pakistan

Ahmed Quraishi calls for coup in Pakistan

This is an explicit call for the violent overthrow of the Pakistani government, and an outright act of sedition by a member of the media. In fact, Mr. Media Taliban has taken this call for return to military dictatorship to the airwaves and tried, in a very clever way, to say that his plan is for the military to overthrow the democratically elected civilian government and replace it with…a civilian government. Presumably, this new government of Quraishi’s would be hand-picked by him.

In the course of his unhinged ranting, Media Taliban Ahmed Quraishi goes so far as to call Pakistan “a failure” and to suggest that we throw out the Constitution! Ahmed Quraishi cynically calls himself a “nationalist,” but he can never call himself a PATRIOT. No REAL Pakistani Patriot and Nationalist would so insult the legacy of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah!

“Pakistan’s parliamentary system is a failure for the past 60 years…”

Ahmed Quraishi insults Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Ahmed Quraishi insults Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Let’s take a close look at Quraishi’s call for a coup d’etat. This is a ridiculous and dangerous proposition from the start.

One, after suffering under military dictatorship for so long, does Quraishi really believe that the military would overthrow the government just to walk away from power? Of course, Ahmed Quraishi, the man who has never met a dictator he didn’t like, would probably be more than happy to another Musharraf back in power.

Ahmed Quraishi receiving an award from Gen. Pervez Musharraf

Ahmed Quraishi receiving an award from Gen. Pervez Musharraf

Two, let’s put aside for a moment the fantasy world in which Ahmed Quraishi lives and examine this idea in the real world. What would happen to Pakistan if the military overthrew the democratically elected government? For a hint, we can look at the recent situation in Honduras. Following the coup d’etat there, Honduras became a global pariah, completely isolated from the world and under a state of emergency and riots. Do we really think things would be better in Pakistan?

Three, building off points One and Two, we can clearly see that this proposal of Mr. Quraishi is a trap for the military. As we clearly demonstrated in our post about Quraishi’s colleague Shireen Mazari’s suggestion that the military cut ties with the Americans, isolating the military will cripple Pakistan’s ability to defend itself. There is no question about this. For an example, we can again look at the recent coup in Honduras. Following the military’s overthrow of the democratically elected government, the US suspended military aid to Honduras.

The United States said on Wednesday it had suspended $16.5 million in military aid to Honduras following last month’s coup, and ousted President Manuel Zelaya demanded his rivals hand power back to him in 24 hours.

For all his anti-American rhetoric, one question keeps coming to mind. Who does Ahmed Quraishi work for?

Ahmed Quraishi appears as a member of the American Association of Political Consultants. He is an expert propagandist, of that there is no doubt. So the question remains, who is Quraishi’s American client? Who is he really working for?

Ahmed Quraishi's member profile for the American Association of Political Consultants

Ahmed Quraishi's member profile for the American Association of Political Consultants

Certainly Quraishi is not working for the Americans. He is clearly trying to force a wedge between the American and and Pakistani military. So then who is supporting him and giving him his talking points? To discover the answer, we must look at what other clients could be registered in America. Perhaps the answer is that powerful and crafty lobby in the US – India?

It’s time for Ahmed Quraishi to come clean about who his real masters are. He should open up his financial records for review by an independent investigation. Jamaati Quraishi has every right to his point of view, but the people also have every right to know who is representing when makes seditious claims for a coup d’etat!

Shireen Mazari Stabs Military In the Back

shireen-mazari-stabs-military-in-the-backShireen Mazari has finally let the cat out of the bag and exposed herself as anti-military. In today’s The Nation, the editorial suggests that because of suspicion and mistrust between the American and Pakistani militaries, Pakistan’s military should cut off it’s ties to the US military. This is a stab in the back from a member of the national media.

For all its faults, the US is a major supporter of Pakistan’s military. The Americans provide essential funding, equipment, and training to Pakistan that help our brave soldiers defend the homeland. Working closely with top military officers, President Obama has expedited delivery of new technologies to help Pakistan’s defense.

During preparations this spring for the Pakistani campaigns in Swat and South Waziristan, President Obama personally intervened at the request of Pakistan’s top army general to speed the delivery of 10 Mi-17 troop transport helicopters. Senior Pentagon officials have also hurried spare parts for Cobra helicopter gunships, night vision goggles, body armor and eavesdropping equipment to the fight.

American military surveillance drones are feeding video images and target information to Pakistani ground commanders, and the Pentagon has quietly provided the Pakistani Air Force with high-resolution, infrared sensors for F-16 warplanes, which Pakistan is using to guide bomb attacks on militants’ strongholds in South Waziristan.

In addition, the number of American Special Forces soldiers and support personnel who are training and advising Pakistani Army and paramilitary troops has doubled in the past eight months, to as many as 150, an American adviser said. The Americans do not conduct combat operations.

This military partnership is ongoing, despite attempts by some to drive a wedge between us and the Americans and leaving us isolated. Think of what this isolation would cost:

This year alone, the Pentagon is sending more than $500 million in arms, equipment and training assistance to Pakistan, to help train and equip the Pakistani military for counterinsurgency operations.

Included in that package is nearly $13 million in electronic eavesdropping equipment to intercept militants’ cellphone calls. In July, the Pentagon supplied Pakistan with 200 night vision goggles, 100 day/night scopes, more than 600 radios and 9,475 sets of body armor.

The Pentagon has also sharply increased programs to bring Pakistani officers to the United States for training, particularly in counterterrorism.

So why is Shireen Mazari suggesting that the military distance itself from the US!?! Today’s editorial says, “It is time to create a distance between the Pakistan and US militaries.”

Let’s think about what this would mean in practical defense terms. If Shireen Mazari had her way, our military would not have:

  • New Mi-17 helicopters
  • New F-16 warplanes
  • Cobra helicopter gunship parts
  • Night vision goggles
  • Body armor to protect our soldiers
  • Eavesdropping equipment to gather intelligence
  • Hi-resolution infrared sensors for F-16 warplanes
  • Training by the world’s superpower
  • $500 million in arms
  • Hundreds of day/night scopes
  • Hundreds of radios

This is only part of the equipment and training provided to Pakistan by the US military. What do you think India would do if we took Shireen Mazari’s advice and cut off our military supplies? Probably declare a national holiday! To turn our backs on this assistance would be to sign our own suicide note.

Surely there is ample suspicion and distrust between Paksitan and the US. But notice that this is never the result of military officials. It is almost never even the result of political officials! No, what causes this suspicion and mistrust is the uninformed writings of questionable characters like Shireen Mazari. Who is she working for, we ask! Certainly not for a strong Pakistan.

Rather than turning our backs on the world’s superpower and cutting off essential sources of advanced military equipment and training, Gen. Kiyani and the military officials should be working to foster closer ties with the American military officers and breaking down barriers of mistrust. Once our military pushes aside those who stand in our way (Shireen Mazari) and develops a partnership of mutual trust with the American military, no one will dare to threaten our nation.
